I have never really celebrated Easter before. At least for the past 8 years or so. Not that I can remember anyway.
I do remember going to the seaside to visit some my family when I was younger. This time of the year is hotter than usual so, any place around the water was great.
That feels like a lifetime ago.
THIS IS MY FIRST PASCUA!!
And it has been great.
It all sort of started on Friday. Gian Luca, Silvio and Giorgio started cooking mid afternoon. Molly joined us in the evening after seeing her parents.
I spend the morning running around, going to supermarkets and getting the things needed for the FEAST (because that is what is has felt like) and a cake I wanted to make. I find mesmerizing how eating and cooking is such a social thing, done over an afternoon and into early hours of the morning. There were about 6 people in the kitchen. With a lot of wine. Enjoying making the food we were later going to eat.
It was sort of the same in my house. My nonna was Italian and loved to cook for everyone. She was funny, loud and very welcoming; it is what it feels like here. I think there were only a few occasions when we actually got together to cook. Most of the times, just as it happens in all places, food is just ready to eat. The process is ignored.
Back to Friday…
Giorgio started making a tomato sauce with lamb, for the home-made pasta we ate on Saturday. Everything has to be tested and checked for a bit more of this or a bit less of that. A terrible duty, but somebody has to do it!
Gian Luca made the dough and sauce for the pizza we during the night (around 1 am really) and also made the Colomba, which is a kind of Panettone traditionally served during Easter with a lot of mascarpone cream, this was the dessert for the night. We ended up eating it around 3 am.
After getting things moving, Gian started making a Guiness cake that we haven’t yet tried. PASCUA IS NOT FINISHED!!
The atmosphere and the smells in the kitchen were both just as loud, lively and delicious.
Lunch yesterday was delicious.
The table was full of antipasti, plates with pasta and lamb sauce, wine and water. A lot of food. I was already full before we had started to eat.
After the lunch, we opened our Easter eggs.
I pretty much passed out after that. Every one stayed in the kitchen to have a coffee. I had to lie down and allow the food reach my belly.
Today, Monday I have a date with myself.
I am taking me the Teatro Goldoni to watch the Russian Ballet doing Swan Lake. Also, Jack will be here in exactly one week!!!!!!!!!
